India’s renewable energy future requires a diverse portfolio capable of responding to different\geographies, resources and patterns of demand. Bioenergy and small hydropower occupy a distinctive place in this portfolio because they combine clean energy generation with local economic value. Unlike solutions that depend entirely on imported equipment or distant fuel supplies, both sectors can draw on resources available within communities and regions. They can provide firm or controllable power, complement variable solar and wind generation and extend the benefits of the energy transition to agriculture, rural industry and mountainous areas.
Bioenergy converts agricultural residues, municipal waste, industrial organic waste, animal waste and other biomass into electricity, heat, biogas, compressed biogas, pellets and briquettes. The MNRE research compendium records around 11.75 GW of biopower generation capacity and highlights programmes supporting waste-to-energy, biomass cogeneration and biogas. The sector
can address several challenges together: crop-residue management, urban waste processing, cleaner cooking and industrial fuels, rural employment and reduced fossil-fuel dependence. Its long-term success, however, depends on reliable feedstock aggregation, transparent pricing, sustainable harvesting, efficient logistics, emissions control and assured offtake for the energy produced. Segregation of municipal waste at source and robust monitoring of plant performance are equally important to protect public confidence and environmental outcomes.
