India’s renewable energy transition is creating one of the world’s largest markets for clean technologies. The strategic question is whether the country will remain primarily a destination for deployment or become a major centre for designing, manufacturing and exporting the systems that power the transition. Clean energy manufacturing links climate ambition with industrial growth. It strengthens energy security, reduces exposure to global supply disruptions, creates skilled employment and allows India to capture a greater share of the economic value generated by its expanding renewable market.
The manufacturing opportunity extends across the full value chain: solar polysilicon, ingots, wafers, cells and modules; wind turbines and components; batteries and power electronics; electrolysers, fuel cells and hydrogen equipment; inverters, smart meters and grid technologies. The MNRE research compendium highlights the rapid expansion of solar manufacturing, supported by the Production Linked Incentive scheme for high-efficiency modules with an outlay of ₹24,000 crore. It records module manufacturing capacity of approximately 192 GW and cell capacity of around 30 GW by May 2026, alongside progress in upstream segments such as ingots and wafers. Wind turbine manufacturing capacity has also expanded, supported by quality and localisation requirements.
Scale alone, however, will not create lasting competitiveness. Indian manufacturing must compete on efficiency, reliability, traceability, innovation and life-cycle performance. Stable demand visibility, effective quality-control orders, testing infrastructure, research partnerships and access to affordable finance are essential. The sector must invest in advanced materials, automation, recycling, circular design and intellectual property, while building domestic capability in critical
components where import dependence remains high. Compliance with credible environmental, labour and traceability standards will increasingly determine access to global customers and climate-conscious capital. Manufacturers also need a workforce trained for precision production, process control, equipment maintenance and rapidly changing technology standards.
A strong manufacturing ecosystem should connect large anchor companies with micro, small and medium enterprises, start-ups, universities and specialised suppliers. It should serve domestic deployment while becoming a trusted part of diversified global supply chains.
