India’s proposed digital energy architecture, including interoperable platforms and open application interfaces, can help different institutions exchange data securely while encouraging innovation by utilities, start-ups and technology providers. Regional Energy Management Centres, advanced forecasting systems, automated generation control and smart-grid applications are already strengthening the management of renewable power. The next opportunity is to connect these capabilities across the full value chain so that a solar rooftop, a battery, a distribution company and a national grid can operate as parts of one coordinated system.
Digitalisation must nevertheless be built on trust. Cybersecurity, consumer privacy, data ownership, interoperability, algorithmic transparency and resilience against system failure require clear standards and strong governance.
Digital tools must also remain accessible to smaller utilities, rural enterprises and consumers, rather than creating a new technological divide. Building digital capability within DISCOMs, system operators and public institutions is therefore as important as acquiring platforms, sensors and analytical software.
