Renewable energy capacity creates value only when the electricity it produces can be delivered reliably, absorbed by the grid and made available when consumers need it. As India moves towards a power system with a much larger share of solar and wind, energy storage and grid integration are becoming central to energy security. They are no longer downstream additions to renewable projects. They are the infrastructure that converts variable generation into dependable power and allows the system to accommodate growth without compromising stability.

India is strengthening transmission through the Green Energy Corridor programme and other interstate and intrastate networks designed to connect resource-rich regions with centres of demand. The MNRE research compendium notes that Green Energy Corridor Phase I commissioned more than 9,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines and over 22,000 MVA of substation capacity, enabling the integration of nearly 26 GW of renewable energy. It also highlights the planned Ladakh renewable energy project, which includes a 12 GWh battery energy storage system. Such investments illustrate the need to plan generation, evacuation and balancing capacity as one coordinated system.

Storage provides flexibility across different time scales. Battery energy storage systems can respond rapidly to changes in supply and demand, support frequency control, reduce curtailment and shift solar power into evening hours. Pumped storage can provide longer-duration balancing and system inertia, while emerging technologies may serve specialised applications. The commercial framework must recognise these different services through transparent procurement, ancillary-service markets, time-of-day pricing and clear rules for charging, discharging and grid participation. Storage planning must also consider safety, recycling, mineral security, domestic manufacturing and the full life-cycle cost of technologies. Distribution-level batteries, electric vehicles and flexible consumer demand can further support local networks when supported by appropriate tariffs and digital controls.

Grid integration requires intelligence as much as infrastructure. Better forecasting, Regional Energy Management Centres, automated generation control, flexible thermal and hydro resources, demand response and digital coordination with distribution companies can improve the system’s ability to manage variability.
