Solar energy has become the defining symbol of India’s renewable energy transformation because it operates across every scale. It powers some of the world’s largest solar parks, appears on urban rooftops, supports irrigation in agricultural fields and brings electricity to remote communities where conventional grid extension is difficult. India’s installed solar capacity crossed 162 GW by June 2026, including more than 30 GW of grid-connected rooftop solar. This expansion reflects the combined impact of competitive procurement, falling technology costs, public investment, private-sector participation and citizen-focused programmes.
The next phase of solar growth will be shaped by the relationship between domestic scale and global cooperation. India is expanding manufacturing across modules, cells and upstream components while strengthening quality standards and supply-chain resilience. At the same time, the International Solar Alliance is helping make solar energy a shared global mission. Through policy support, financing, capacity building and knowledge exchange, the alliance connects more than 120 countries. Initiatives such as the Global Solar Facility, STAR-C training centres, the SolarX Startup Challenge and programmes supporting solar pumps in Africa demonstrate how markets can be developed through partnership rather than through technology exports alone.
Global solar markets face common challenges. Many countries possess abundant solar resources but lack affordable finance, bankable project pipelines, skilled workers, reliable grids, storage capacity and predictable policy frameworks. The solution requires coordinated action across the entire ecosystem. Demand aggregation can reduce costs; blended finance can improve project viability; common standards can build investor confidence; and regional manufacturing can strengthen supply resilience. Solar deployment must also be linked with transmission, storage, recycling and productive applications so that capacity addition translates into dependable economic and social value. Responsible land use, community engagement, water-efficient operations and end-of-life management will become increasingly important as markets mature.
India brings a distinctive proposition to this global conversation. It combines a large domestic market, experience in utility-scale and distributed deployment, growing manufacturing capability and a commitment to South-South cooperation.
