Wind energy is one of the pillars of India’s renewable energy expansion and an increasingly important component of its industrial ecosystem. India’s installed wind capacity stood at more than 57 GW by June 2026, placing the country among the world’s leading wind markets. The sector also benefits from an established domestic manufacturing base covering turbines, towers, blades, generators, gearboxes and other major components. This combination of resource potential,
engineering capability and market scale gives India the foundation to accelerate both onshore development and the next generation of wind technologies.

The larger opportunity lies in moving from single-source projects to hybrid energy systems. Solar and wind resources often produce electricity at different times of the day and across different seasons. Combining them at a common site or delivery point can improve utilisation of land and transmission infrastructure, smooth the generation profile and reduce the variability associated with either resource alone. When integrated with battery storage, pumped storage or other balancing solutions, hybrid projects can move closer to firm and round-the-clock renewable power required by industries, distribution companies and emerging green hydrogen facilities.

Scaling hybrid systems will require planning beyond individual power plants. Resource assessment, forecasting, grid connectivity, market design and storage dispatch need to be coordinated from the beginning. Repowering older wind sites with more efficient turbines can unlock additional generation from locations that already possess roads and transmission access. New projects will require faster land and evacuation approvals, stronger forecasting compliance and continued
investment in Green Energy Corridors. Detailed resource mapping and early infrastructure planning will also be essential as India evaluates offshore wind and other technically complex opportunities. Manufacturing policy must also support quality, innovation, component traceability and the development of larger and more efficient turbine platforms.

Hybrid systems represent a shift in how renewable energy is valued. The objective is no longer to maximise generation from one technology in isolation, but to deliver cleaner electricity when the system needs it.
